Former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez hanged himself in his prison cell early Wednesday morning while serving a life sentence without parole, Massachusetts Department of Corrections officials said, concluding a catastrophic and implausible spiral from millionaire football star to convicted murderer to irremediably tragic figure. Officers discovered Hernandez hanging from a bed sheet attached to the window inside his single-person cell at Shirley Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley, Mass., according to the state’s account. Hernandez had jammed the door from the inside with “various items,” the account said. Officers attempted to save his life and transported him to the UMass-Leominster hospital.
